Understanding Prints (Original Graphic Work)

What is a Print (Original Graphic Work)?

An Original Graphic Work (Grabado) or Original Print is an artwork created by the artist using a matrix (like a metal plate, woodblock, or stone) to manually transfer ink onto paper. The artist is directly involved in the creation of the plate and usually the printing process, resulting in a limited edition of identical, original artworks.

What is the difference between Etching, Woodcut, andLithography?

They are all different techniques of Original Printmaking (Grabado):

Etching (Grabado):
Uses a metal plate where lines are incised with acid.

Woodcut (Xilografía):
Uses a block of wood where the image is carved, and the raised parts hold the ink.

Lithography (Litografía):
Uses a stone or metal plate and relies on the principle that oil and water repel each other; the image is drawn on the stone with a greasy medium.

What do the numbers at the bottom of a print mean(e.g., 5/50)?

The numbers indicate the edition size and the specific print number. In the example 5/50, it means that the print is the 5th impression pulled from a total edition of 50 prints. It confirms that the work is a limited edition and not a unique piece or a mass reproduction.

Is an "Original Graphic Work" the same as a"Reproduction" (poster)?

No, they are fundamentally different. An Original Graphic Work is an original artwork created as a limited edition print by the artist. A Reproduction (or poster) is simply a mass-produced photographic copy of a pre-existing artwork (like a painting) and has no inherent artistic value as an original work.
