Certificate of Authenticity
A Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is a document that proves an artwork is genuine. Often, it is signed by the artist, but it may also come from the gallery that represents them or from a printmaker who worked on the piece. For artworks resold later, COAs are usually provided by the artist’s estate or foundation. A COA generally lists the artist’s name, the title of the work, its date, medium, and size, and sometimes includes a picture of the artwork.
